The rifle weighed down my arm like a burro laden with gold.

Gold. All of this for gold. A cold, precious, inanimate rock.

To me, gold meant freedom. The freedom to come and go, to not answer to anyone. But it seemed gold meant much more to Fred.

I focused on the center of his chest. An easy shot. No chance of missing. The same odds he’d given Weiser.

As I ran my finger along the length of the trigger, I imagined the scene. The blast, the blood, another body to bury.

I couldn’t live with that. And Weiser wouldn’t want me to. He believed in the same God I did. A God who watched, even now.
